In July 2026, with only a couple of minutes to spare before heading to the airport to catch my international flight home to finish my 2 week trip in Asia, I made one very last stop that I simply couldn’t miss. I had the incredible honor of meeting the owner of Biu Kee Mahjong, the last remaining artisan in Hong Kong still hand-etching traditional mahjong tiles. Although our visit was brief, it was a privilege to spend even a few moments with someone preserving such an important part of mahjong’s history. I had the opportunity to purchase one tile, just a single hand-etched mahjong tile engraved with the Chinese character for “lucky”.  I’ll keep it nearby whenever I play—hopefully, it brings me plenty of jokers! His waitlist for a set of tiles is over 10 months long.  Maybe one day I'll get on that list but for now, I'll just stick with my current sets and my one LUCKY tile.
